How to Play Blackjack
Learn the rules of blackjack: card values, how a round works, and your options during play. A beginner-friendly overview of the most widely played casino table game.
The Objective
Blackjack is a card game where you play against the dealer. Your goal is to draw cards with a total value closer to 21 than the dealer's hand, without going over. Going over 21 is called a "bust" and results in an immediate loss, regardless of what the dealer holds.
Card Values
- Number cards (2 through 10) are worth their printed value.
- Face cards — Jack, Queen, and King — are each worth 10.
- Aces count as either 1 or 11, whichever benefits your hand.
A hand using an Ace as 11 is called a "soft" hand. If drawing another card would cause a bust, the Ace automatically counts as 1 instead.
How a Round Works
- Place your bet before any cards are dealt.
- Deal: You receive two cards face up. The dealer takes one card face up and one face down (the "hole card").
- You act first using the options described below.
- Dealer reveals the hole card and draws until reaching 17 or higher. Most tables require the dealer to stand on all 17s; some require a hit on "soft 17."
- Outcome: The hand closest to 21 without busting wins. Ties (a "push") return your bet.
Your Playing Options
- Hit — Draw one more card. You may hit as many times as you like until you stand or bust.
- Stand — Keep your current hand and take no more cards.
- Double Down — Double your original bet and receive exactly one more card. Most casinos allow this on any two cards.
- Split — If your first two cards share the same value, you may split them into two separate hands, each with its own matching bet, played independently.
- Surrender — Some tables allow you to forfeit the hand and recover half your bet. This must be taken before any other action.
Natural Blackjack
If your opening two cards are an Ace and any 10-value card, you have a "natural" or "blackjack." This typically pays 3:2 on your bet. Some tables pay only 6:5, which significantly reduces the payout. Always check the table rules before sitting down.
Understanding the House Advantage
Like all casino games, blackjack carries a mathematical advantage for the house built into the rules. The exact margin varies by table rules — number of decks, dealer drawing rules, and payout rates. No playing decisions eliminate this advantage entirely. Each hand is an independent event; past results do not influence future outcomes.
Responsible Play
Set a budget before you sit down and commit to it. Never bet money you cannot afford to lose. If you find yourself chasing losses or playing longer than planned, take a break. Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to generate income.
