Egypt's Arabian horse breeding tradition is among the world's oldest and most celebrated. The Egyptian Arabian — a pure-bred Arabian horse with bloodlines traceable to the Egyptian state studs and the great private collections of Egyptian and European breeders of the 19th and early 20th centuries — is considered by Arabian horse enthusiasts to represent the breed in its most refined form, and Egyptian-bred Arabians command premium prices at international auctions.

The influence of this Arabian heritage on Egyptian thoroughbred racing is subtle but traceable — Egyptian thoroughbred breeders have historically favoured stamina-oriented bloodlines that complement the desert-adapted endurance qualities of the region's equine population. Egyptian Classic races have traditionally been run at distances (2,000-2,400 metres) that reward this stamina orientation.

The proximity of Egypt to the Gulf's rapidly expanding racing programme (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain) has created new opportunities for Egyptian horses and trainers — Egyptian-bred horses occasionally compete in the Gulf's prestigious meetings, and Gulf-trained horses have appeared in the Cairo programme's international invitational races.

Horse racing betting in Egypt operates through the licensed pari-mutuel system at the Cairo Racing Club and Alexandria Smouha Club. The Egyptian Racing Authority (ERA) manages the wagering framework and the licensing of on-course and off-course betting operators.
