About Al Rayyan Racecourse
Al Rayyan Racecourse in the Al Rayyan municipality of Doha — Qatar's capital — is the country's most important horse racing venue and the centrepiece of a racing programme that punches significantly above its weight relative to Qatar's small population and geographic size. The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC), which operates Al Rayyan and manages the country's racing programme, is internationally recognised primarily through the country's role as title sponsor of some of the world's most prestigious races: Qatar is the presenting sponsor of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp (the 'Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe'), the Goodwood Festival (the 'Qatar Goodwood Festival'), and several other major European race meetings — reflecting Qatar's strategic investment in horse racing's international brand as part of the country's broader sports diplomacy programme. The Al Rayyan track hosts Qatar's domestic racing programme (October–May, avoiding the summer heat) on both turf and dirt surfaces, with a race card that includes the Qatar International Stakes, the QREC Cup, and several listed races that attract international horses — particularly from the UK, Ireland, France, and UAE — during the winter and spring months. Qatar's thoroughbred breeding programme, conducted at several national studs, focuses on producing horses competitive at the regional Arabian Gulf level and at international listed/Group 3 level. The country has a particularly strong tradition of Arabian horse racing alongside its thoroughbred programme — Arabian horse racing is deeply embedded in Gulf cultural identity, and Qatar's Arabian racing programme at Al Rayyan is among the most active in the region.
