Belgrade Hippodrome (Hipodrom Beograd)

The Belgrade Hippodrome (Hipodrom Beograd), located at the Mokri Lug district in the south-eastern suburbs of the Serbian capital, is one of South-Eastern Europe's oldest continuously operating racecourses and the centrepiece of Serbian horse racing since its formal establishment in 1923. Serbia's racing history pre-dates the hippodrome's current site — informal racing and cavalry exercises were common in 19th-century Belgrade — but the formal establishment of the Belgrade Hippodrome in the early Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes period gave Serbian racing a permanent institutional home. Under Yugoslav socialism, the hippodrome was nationalised and maintained as part of the state physical culture infrastructure, becoming one of the key venues for Yugoslav horse sport alongside the Zagreb and Ljubljana hippodromes. The Belgrade facility operates thoroughbred flat racing on a left-handed dirt track, supplemented by a harness trotting programme — an arrangement that reflects the dual character of Yugoslav-era racing that Serbia has maintained post-independence (2006). The Serbian Derby (Srpska Klasik Trka), run over approximately 2000 metres, is the country's most prestigious Classic race and has been a fixture of the Belgrade programme since the interwar period with brief wartime interruptions. Serbia has a notable horse breeding tradition rooted in the flat agricultural lands of Vojvodina — the autonomous northern province — where Arabian horse breeding alongside thoroughbred operations has created a distinctive local bloodstock tradition. Serbian racing governance is managed through the Konjički Savez Srbije (Horse Riding Alliance of Serbia) and the Jockey Club of Serbia, with the Belgrade Hippodrome serving as the primary licensed venue for pari-mutuel wagering.
