Colombo Turf Club

The Colombo Turf Club provides Sri Lanka's secondary racing programme on the island's coastal lowlands, offering a flat-season complement to the renowned Nuwara Eliya highland meetings. Racing in the Colombo area has a colonial heritage parallel to Nuwara Eliya — the British colonial administration maintained horse racing at Colombo as part of the garrison and commercial community's sporting life throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The coastal racing conditions differ significantly from Nuwara Eliya: sea-level racing is conducted in Sri Lanka's tropical climate, with the going and pace profile quite different from the cool highland circuit. This creates an interesting dual-track form picture for Sri Lanka's small but dedicated racing community — horses who excel at the highland circuit are not necessarily the same horses who perform best at sea level, and the conditioning required for each venue's demands varies. The Colombo programme is typically run outside the April peak season, providing race opportunities across more of the calendar year and extending the Ceylon Turf Club's total race days beyond what the single Nuwara Eliya April meeting can provide. The Ceylon Turf Club governs both venues and manages the national stud book, Classic series registration, and jockey licensing across the Sri Lankan programme.
