Floreal Training Centre

The Floreal Training Centre in the Plaines Wilhems plateau area of Mauritius provides the Mauritius Turf Club's primary thoroughbred training infrastructure, complementing the racing programme at Champ de Mars with altitude training facilities suited to the Mauritian climate. Floreal's elevated position (approximately 600m above sea level, compared to sea-level Port Louis) provides cooler temperatures and training conditions that differ significantly from the race day environment at Champ de Mars — a condition that requires trainers to calibrate training loads and distances for horses who race at a lower elevation. The facility includes grass gallops, a sand training track, stable blocks, veterinary inspection bays, and the administrative offices of several of the MTC's licensed trainers. The Mauritian bloodstock industry operates within the constraints of an island geography — horses are primarily imported from South Africa, Australia, and France, with a small breeding operation maintaining local bloodlines. The Floreal facility handles the quarantine and acclimatisation process for imported horses, which must adjust to Mauritian conditions before entering MTC-licensed training.
