About Hipódromo de Monterrico

The Hipódromo de Monterrico in the Monterrico district of Lima, Peru is South America's third most important flat racing venue — behind Argentina's Palermo and Brazil's Jockey Club Brasileiro — and the centrepiece of the Peruvian thoroughbred racing programme. Established in the early 20th century and operated by the Jockey Club del Perú, the Monterrico track is Lima's primary horse racing facility and the home of Peru's Classic programme: the Gran Premio Nacional (the country's most prestigious race), the Gran Premio Presidente de la República, and the Peruvian Derby equivalent. Monterrico's most distinctive feature is its altitude — Lima itself sits at sea level, but the track operates in a metropolitan environment where the Pacific coastal climate (cloudy, mild, and virtually rainless) produces racing conditions that are relatively stable year-round, unlike the extreme seasonal variations that affect racing in the Andes highlands. Peruvian thoroughbred racing has a long tradition of engagement with Argentine bloodstock — the strongest Peruvian horses are typically Argentine-bred, and the Lima programme has historically served as a proving ground for horses targeting Argentina's Group 1 programme. The Jockey Club del Perú's track also incorporates a golf course, a social club, and entertainment facilities that reflect the Latin American race club tradition of combining horse racing with broader recreational and social activities.
