Hipódromo V Centenario (Fifth Centenary Hippodrome) in Santo Domingo was opened in 1992 as part of the Dominican Republic's celebrations of the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas — the 'V Centenario' naming reflects this founding occasion. Built to a modern international standard with significant state investment, the track was designed from the outset to support the Dominican Republic's participation in Caribbean regional racing and in the Clásico del Caribe championship series, which the country joined as a member nation around the time of the hippodrome's opening. The track operates on a dirt surface with a configuration optimised for Dominican racing conditions — the Caribbean climate means year-round racing is possible, and the Dominican programme runs on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year. The Clásico del Caribe has been hosted at V Centenario, bringing together the Caribbean's best Classic champions for the region's most prestigious title race. The Dominican Republic's horse breeding programme has developed steadily since the 1990s, with increasing numbers of Dominican-bred horses competing successfully in Puerto Rico (which, as a US territory, provides access to a larger and better-resourced racing market just a short shipping distance away).
