Hippodrome de Dakar

The Hippodrome de Dakar is West Africa's most historically established horse racing venue and the flagship institution of Senegal's national racing programme under the Société d'Encouragement à l'Élevage du Cheval au Sénégal (SETRAS). The track's origins lie in the French colonial administration of Sénégal — Dakar was the capital of French West Africa (Afrique Occidentale Française) from 1902 to 1960, and as the premier city of the largest French colonial territory in Africa, Dakar developed the full range of European sporting institutions including horse racing. The Hippodrome de Dakar was established in the colonial period and has operated continuously through independence (1960) and into the modern era, making it one of the longest-continuously-operating racing venues in sub-Saharan Africa. Dakar's horse racing tradition reflects both the French colonial equestrian culture and the deep indigenous horse culture of the Sahelian West African peoples — the Wolof, Tukulor, and Serer ethnic groups of Senegal have maintained their own horse-breeding and equestrian traditions for centuries, rooted in the cavalry warfare and aristocratic culture of the Wolof Empire, the Jolof Confederation, and the Toucouleur Empire. This confluence of French colonial and Sahelian indigenous equestrian traditions gives Dakar racing a distinctive cultural character unlike any other African racing programme. The Grand Prix du Sénégal is the most prestigious race on the national calendar, attracting the country's best horses for a race day that draws Dakar's social and political elite. The SETRAS administers the stud book, racing licences, and pari-mutuel wagering at the Dakar track, operating within the regulatory framework of Senegal's gaming legislation.
