Hippodrome de Sousse

The Hippodrome de Sousse provides Tunisia's provincial racing programme at the country's most visited coastal city — Sousse, the 'Pearl of the Sahel' on Tunisia's eastern Mediterranean coast, a UNESCO World Heritage city with a medina dating to the 9th century. The Sousse hippodrome operates during the summer months when Tunis-area racing at Kassar Said is curtailed by heat — the coastal Mediterranean breezes at Sousse make summer racing more viable than at the inland capital, and the track provides continuity for the Tunisian racing season during the hottest period. The racing programme at Sousse is necessarily more modest than the flagship Kassar Said events — the track serves the central Tunisian racing community, including the horse-owning families of Sousse, Monastir, and Mahdia, who maintain a tradition of thoroughbred ownership rooted in the French Protectorate era's equestrian culture. Sousse's position as Tunisia's primary tourist destination means race days occasionally attract international visitors alongside the domestic racing community — a contrast to the more exclusively Tunisian audience at Kassar Said.
