Hippodrome Wellington

The Hippodrome Wellington in Ostend is Belgium's most celebrated flat racing venue and the centrepiece of the Belgian thoroughbred summer season. Established in the late 19th century and named for the Duke of Wellington (who was famously a horse enthusiast), the track occupies a seafront position in the Belgian coastal resort of Ostend that gives it a glamorous, holiday-season character — race days at Wellington are among the most fashionable equestrian events on the Belgian social calendar. The track's turf course runs at a slight gradient along the coast, with sea views from the grandstand providing a backdrop unique among European racecourses. The Grand Prix de la Ville d'Ostende, the track's most prestigious race, is a Group 3 event that attracts horses from France, the UK, Germany, and occasionally further afield. The Belgian flat racing season is administered by the Jockey Club de Belgique, which oversees a programme of approximately 40 race days per year across Wellington and several other Belgian venues. Wellington's specifically summer-season positioning — the track operates primarily from May through September — reflects the Ostend resort town's broader seasonal economy.
