Karlovac Hippodrome

The Karlovac Hippodrome serves as Croatia's secondary racing venue, located in the city of Karlovac — the historic fortress city at the confluence of four rivers (the Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra) situated approximately 56 kilometres south-west of Zagreb. Karlovac's racing tradition reflects the city's role as a regional centre for the agricultural hinterland of central Croatia, where horse breeding and equestrian sport have long been embedded in local culture. The hippodrome runs primarily standardbred harness racing — reflecting the dominant character of Croatian provincial racing — with occasional thoroughbred flat meetings integrated into the national programme calendar. The track serves as a development venue for young horses and jockeys who progress to the main Zagreb programme, and the Karlovac regional series provides important prize money and experience for the horse-breeding operations of central and coastal Croatia. The Karlovac Classic is the track's leading event, a listed race for Croatian-bred horses that feeds into the breeding evaluation programme of the Croatian Equestrian Federation. The hippodrome has also served as an alternative venue when the Zagreb main track undergoes maintenance or renovation, ensuring continuity of the national race programme.
