About Marsa Training Track
The Marsa Training Track provides the Malta Racing Club's licensed trainers with a dedicated facility for morning workouts, conditioning sessions, and pre-race preparation for the standardbred trotters that compete at the adjacent Marsa Racecourse. Malta's small land area — approximately 316 square kilometres for the entire island — means that dedicated equestrian facilities are compressed into a very small geographic footprint, with the Marsa complex providing both racing and training infrastructure at the same site. The training track operates under MRC oversight with sessions scheduled in the early morning to avoid the midday heat of Malta's Mediterranean summer. Access is regulated through trainer licensing, with MRC-approved trainers holding formal rights to use the facility as part of their training contracts. The facility accommodates the approximately 200-300 standardbred horses that are registered with the MRC at any given time — a horse population that is modest by European trotting standards but sufficient to support a competitive year-round racing programme on the island. Malta's horse population is maintained through imports from Italy, France, and Scandinavia, as the island has no significant domestic breeding programme — the small land area and limited pasture make sustainable thoroughbred or standardbred breeding economically unviable at commercial scale.
