Nuwara Eliya Race Club

The Nuwara Eliya Race Club, established in 1875 in the hill station of Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka's Central Province, is one of the world's most extraordinary horse racing venues — a turf circuit set at approximately 1,884 metres (6,180 feet) above sea level in the heart of Sri Lanka's tea-growing highlands, surrounded by neat colonial-era bungalows, manicured English gardens, and the impossibly green landscape of the Ceylon tea country. Nuwara Eliya ('City of Light' in Sinhala) was developed by British colonial administrators as a hill station — a high-altitude retreat from the tropical coastal heat — and by the 1860s and 1870s had established the full range of British sporting and social institutions: a golf club, a cricket ground, a hunting club, and, in 1875, a turf club for horse racing. The Nuwara Eliya Race Club has operated annually since that founding, with the racing season concentrated in April — the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year period, when Sri Lanka's cultural calendar coincides with the post-Easter holiday season traditionally favoured by Colombo's business community for the highland trip. The April race meeting is one of Sri Lanka's most socially significant annual events: the colonial-era tradition of 'going up to Nuwara Eliya' for the races has been maintained through independence (1948) and into the modern era, with Sri Lanka's business, political, and social elite attending the meeting alongside tourists and racing enthusiasts from around the island. Racing at Nuwara Eliya is thoroughbred flat racing on a tight oval circuit — the high altitude (approximately 6,000 feet) means that all horses run at a slightly reduced pace compared to sea-level equivalents, and form from coastal Sri Lanka tracks (where occasional meetings have been held) does not translate directly to Nuwara Eliya's conditions. The Ceylon Turf Club, which manages the island's racing through its Nuwara Eliya Race Club operation, has maintained the stud book and Classic series that links modern Sri Lankan racing to its British colonial foundations.
