The Selangor Turf Club's Sungei Besi Racecourse in Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's most important horse racing venue and the centrepiece of the Malaysian thoroughbred racing programme — one of the most active flat racing schedules in Southeast Asia, operating approximately 45 race days per year on its turf and synthetic tracks. Malaysian horse racing operates under the governance of the Malaysian Racing Association (MRA), which oversees racing at Selangor alongside the Penang Turf Club and the Perak Turf Club — a network of three racecourses that collectively provide Malaysia with the most comprehensive regional racing infrastructure in Southeast Asia outside of Singapore. The Selangor programme is specifically notable for its integration with the Singapore Turf Club's calendar — horses move freely between Malaysian and Singaporean racing programmes, and the combined Singapore-Malaysia racing circuit is effectively a single interconnected racing economy with shared Simulcast pools and cross-border licensing. The Malaysian Classic programme (Malaysian Derby, Malaysian Oaks, and the Tan Sri Lim Yong San Trophy) runs on the Sungei Besi turf course and attracts the region's best horses from both the domestic Malaysian programme and Singaporean stables targeting the Malaysian Classic season.
