Sofia Hippodrome (Hipodroum Sofia)

The Sofia Hippodrome (Hipodroum Sofia) is one of the oldest active racecourses in Europe — established in 1884 during the period when Bulgaria was emerging as a modern independent state following liberation from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, and reflecting the rapid adoption of European sporting institutions by the young Bulgarian state. The track is located in the western districts of Sofia, Bulgaria's capital and largest city, on a site that has been associated with horse racing and equestrian sport continuously for nearly 150 years. The Sofia Hippodrome has operated through some of the most turbulent periods in Bulgarian history — the Balkan Wars and First World War, the Second World War (when Bulgaria was an Axis ally), and the long communist period (1944-1989) during which racing was nationalised and integrated into the Bulgarian state sports system. Through all these periods, the hippodrome maintained some form of racing, making it one of the more resilient racing institutions in South-Eastern Europe. The track operates thoroughbred flat racing on a left-handed turf oval, supplemented by a standardbred trotting programme. The Bulgarian Derby (Balgarski Derbi) — one of South-Eastern Europe's oldest Classic races, with origins in the late 19th century — is the centrepiece of the Sofia programme, run over approximately 2,000 metres in late spring. The Bulgarian Oaks, the Bulgarian 2000 Guineas, and the Grand Prix Sofia complete the main Classic and prestige race programme. Post-communist Bulgarian racing has faced significant economic challenges, but the core programme has been sustained by the Bulgarian Equestrian Federation and the Sofia Hippodrome management, with the Classic series providing continuity with the country's deep equestrian heritage.
