Vermo Racetrack

Vermo Racetrack in Espoo (part of the greater Helsinki metropolitan area) is Finland's most important horse racing facility and the centre of the country's overwhelmingly harness-racing-dominant horse sport culture. Finnish horse racing is almost entirely harness racing — the Finnish Warm-blood (Finnhorse) breed, developed over centuries as a multipurpose agricultural horse, has been specifically adapted for harness racing competition and forms the backbone of the domestic racing programme alongside international Standardbred imports. Vermo's programme, administered by Suomen Hippos (the Finnish Horse Breeding Association), runs approximately 100 race days per year and generates some of Northern Europe's largest single-race betting pools through the Finnish Totalisator system — the Toto system's pool sizes are among the largest in Scandinavia on major race days. The Finnish Trot Derby, contested at Vermo in summer, is the pinnacle of the Finnish Classic harness racing season and attracts the country's best three-year-old trotters. Finland's specific racing culture — characterised by a love of harness racing that is embedded in the national agricultural tradition, a high per-capita betting rate, and the specific cachet of Finnhorse racing alongside international standardbred competition — makes Vermo a distinctive venue in the Northern European racing landscape.
