Zagreb Hippodrome (Hipodrom Zagreb)

The Zagreb Hippodrome (Hipodrom Zagreb), situated at Staro Čiče near Velika Gorica approximately 20 kilometres south of Zagreb's city centre and adjacent to Zagreb Airport, is Croatia's main horse racing venue and the organisational centre of Croatian horse sport. The hippodrome traces its roots to the Austro-Hungarian period, when Zagreb (then Agram) was an important city of the Habsburg Empire and equestrian sport was well-established among the city's prosperous middle class and military establishment. Formal racing at the Zagreb Hippodrome in its modern location began in the 1920s following Yugoslav unification, and the track developed through the interwar period as part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia's sporting infrastructure. Under socialist Yugoslavia (1945-1991), the hippodrome was nationalised and operated as part of the state sports system, maintaining both a thoroughbred flat racing programme and a significant standardbred trotting tradition that has characterised Croatian horse racing ever since. Croatia's horse sport has strong ties to the breeding traditions of its hinterland regions — particularly Slavonia and the Pannonian plain, where horse breeding has been a major agricultural activity for centuries, and the Lipizzaner tradition (shared with neighbouring Slovenia) which adds cultural prestige to Croatian equestrian sport. The Zagreb Hippodrome is home to the Croatian Derby (Hrvatska Utrka Punokrvnih Konja), the country's most prestigious flat race, as well as the leading trot race of the Croatian calendar. Post-independence (1991), Croatian horse racing underwent restructuring and privatisation while maintaining its dual flat/harness character. The track operates regular weekend meetings from spring through autumn.
