Horse Racing in Turkey

Turkey's thoroughbred racing is anchored by the historic Veliefendi Hippodrome in Istanbul — a track that has operated since 1912 and hosts the Turkish Derby, Gazi Koşusu, and a growing programme of international racing. Positioned between Europe and the Middle East, Turkish racing has developed rapidly in the 21st century with improved prize money and bloodstock quality.

Turkey's Racing Tradition

Horse racing in Turkey dates to the late Ottoman Empire — the Turkish Jockey Club (TJC, Türkiye Jokey Kulübü) was founded in 1889 and the Veliefendi Hippodrome in Istanbul opened in 1912. Turkish racing is entirely administered by the TJC, which operates tracks at Istanbul, İzmir, Ankara, Bursa, Adana, and Şanlıurfa — a network of venues providing year-round racing across the country's diverse regions.

The Turkish Jockey Club's investment in bloodstock quality has significantly improved racing standards since the 1990s — European-bred horses (primarily from Ireland and France) have been imported to develop Turkey's breeding base, and several Turkish-trained horses have competed internationally at Group level. The Bosphorus Stakes at Veliefendi has occasionally attracted UAE and French raiders.
