AGA: US Commercial Gaming Revenue Topped $66 Billion in 2023, Third Straight Record Year

The American Gaming Association released its annual commercial gaming revenue report in early 2024 confirming that US commercial gaming revenue set a record for the third consecutive year in 2023. Total US commercial gaming revenue surpassed $66 billion — with sports betting gross gaming revenue exceeding $10 billion for the first time in a single year.

The AGA's State of the States report tracks revenue across all 44 commercial gaming states, covering land-based casino gaming, sports betting, and online casino gaming (iGaming). The 2023 record was driven by the continued maturation of online sports betting markets opened in recent years, stable land-based casino performance, and early iGaming growth in the handful of states with regulated online casinos.

Sports betting revenue passed the $10 billion annual threshold in 2023, a milestone reflecting the rapid expansion of the legal sports wagering industry since the Supreme Court's Murphy v. NCAA ruling in May 2018 struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) and opened the door for state-by-state legalisation.

The AGA noted that 43 of 44 commercial gaming states generated higher gaming tax revenue in 2023 than they did in the pre-pandemic year of 2019. Commercial gaming taxes nationally reached approximately $13.5 billion, funding state budgets for education, infrastructure, problem gambling treatment, and other public purposes. The consistent year-over-year revenue growth from 2021 through 2023 confirmed that the pandemic-era demand surge for gaming was not temporary and reflected durable structural demand for regulated gambling products.
