Reading a Horse Racing Pedigree: Sire, Dam & Black-Type Families

A horse racing pedigree is a genetic story compressed into tabular format — identifying sire lines, black-type families, dosage indicators, and distance suitability markers. For unraced horses, pedigree is often the only available form information; for improving horses, it explains why certain conditions bring out the best. Reading pedigrees is an essential skill for the serious form analyst.

How a Pedigree Is Structured

A standard racing pedigree shows three or four generations of ancestors in a "pedigree table" or "ancestral tree" format:

  • Sire (father) — top half of the pedigree
  • Dam (mother) — bottom half
  • Sire's sire (paternal grandsire) and dam's sire (maternal grandsire, or "broodmare sire")
  • Third and fourth generation ancestors

Racing Post, Timeform, and equivalent databases present pedigrees with the sire in capitals (e.g., GALILEO) and the dam in mixed case (e.g., Urban Sea). Black-type races (Pattern or Listed winners in the sire's or dam's family) are highlighted.

What "Black Type" Means

"Black type" refers to the typographic convention in sale catalogues where Pattern and Listed race winners and placed horses are printed in bold type. A horse with multiple black-type relatives (winners in Group/Grade 1–3 or Listed races) has a pedigree that commands premium prices at bloodstock auctions and signals genetic quality.

Reading black-type: bold text = race winner, italic bold = placed horse. A page full of black type indicates a high-class family; sparse black type may indicate a horse bred for cheaper handicap-level racing.

Sire Analysis: What to Look For

Distance specialisation: All sires develop profiles over time. Galileo's sons typically want 1m2f+ and improve with age on good-to-soft ground. Danzig-line horses tend to be speedy, precocious, and suited by firm ground and sprint distances. These profiles are published annually by services like Weatherbys, TRM, and Timeform.

Ground preferences: Many sires pass on going preferences consistently. Checking whether a first-season sire's own best performances were on soft ground, and then mapping that against his runners' results, is a legitimate analytical approach.

Precocity vs. development: Some sire lines produce early-maturing two-year-olds (Exceed and Excel, Kodiac); others produce horses that need time (Montjeu, Camelot). This matters enormously for juvenile racing analysis.

Dosage: A Breeding Angle for Distance

The Dosage system (developed by Dr. Franco Varola, popularised by Steven Roman) assigns breeding points to prominent chef-de-race sires across five aptitude categories from "Brilliant" (speed) to "Professional" (stamina). A horse's dosage profile reflects its theoretical speed-stamina balance.

While Dosage has been criticised for oversimplification, it provides a useful framework: a high Dosage Index (DI > 4) suggests a sprinter/miler; a low DI (< 1) suggests a stayer or National Hunt prospect.

Dam Lines and the Broodmare Sire

The dam's influence is often underestimated. A mare's racing record and family are critical — a black-type dam from a black-type family is inherently more likely to produce a quality racehorse regardless of the sire. The "broodmare sire" (the dam's sire) also influences offspring, as maternal half-siblings share the same broodmare sire and can be compared directly.
