Sports Betting Markets Explained: From 1X2 to Asian Handicap

Alex Watts 9 min read beginner

From simple win/draw/win markets to complex Asian handicaps and player props — here's every major sports betting market explained.

1X2 (Win/Draw/Win)

The simplest football market: bet on Home Win (1), Draw (X), or Away Win (2). Used in football and rugby. Wide margins from bookmakers mean lower value than handicap markets.

Asian Handicap

Eliminates the draw by giving a goal handicap to the stronger team. If you back Team A at -1.5, they must win by 2+ goals. Reduces the bookmaker's margin and eliminates one outcome, improving value.

Over/Under (Totals)

Bet on the total goals/points scored being over or under a set line. Over 2.5 goals in football = 3+ goals must be scored. Available across all major sports.

Both Teams to Score (BTTS)

Yes = both teams score at least one goal. Popular accumulator market in football. High correlation events (e.g., defensive teams) offer exploitable value.

Player Props

Bets on individual player statistics: anytime goalscorer, first scorer, assists, passing yards. NBA and NFL player props are the fastest-growing betting market. Line shopping across books essential.

Outright Futures

Season-long bets on tournament winners, promotion/relegation, top scorer. Typically offer best value early in the season before the market adjusts.
