All modern Thoroughbreds trace their male-line pedigree exclusively to one of these three stallions — a fact that makes the Thoroughbred one of the most selectively bred animals in history, with 300+ years of documented pedigree maintained by national Stud Books since the publication of the first General Stud Book in 1791. The Arabian blood that formed the foundation of the breed contributed explosive acceleration and refined physical conformation; subsequent centuries of selection for racing performance have amplified these qualities while developing the specific cardiovascular capacity and psychological intensity that characterises the modern Thoroughbred.
Physical Characteristics
The Thoroughbred is a tall, lean, finely built horse — typically 15.2 to 17 hands (157–173 cm at the withers) and weighing between 450–550kg in racing condition. The breed's defining physical characteristics: a refined, slightly dished head with large, expressive eyes; a long, arching neck that reflects Arabian influence; deep chest with large lung capacity; a short back with powerful hindquarters that generate the propulsive force for acceleration; and long, clean legs with fine bone. The Thoroughbred's cardiovascular system is extraordinary by animal standards — a racing Thoroughbred's heart typically weighs 4–5kg (versus 3–4kg for an average horse), with some champion horses like Secretariat and Phar Lap documented to have hearts of 10–13kg. This cardiac capacity, combined with efficient oxygen extraction from blood, produces the sustained high-speed effort that flat racing requires.
Speed vs Stamina: The Racing Profile
Not all Thoroughbreds are created equal in the speed/stamina balance — and this variation is the primary driver of horse racing's classification into sprint and distance races. Sprint specialists (effective at 5–7 furlongs, approximately 1,000–1,400m) tend to be heavily muscled with a quick turnover of stride and cardiovascular profiles optimised for short, explosive effort. Staying horses (effective at 1½ miles / 2,400m+) are typically longer-bodied, more economical in their action, and have cardiovascular systems optimised for sustained effort. The breeding that produces great sprinters — speed sire lines like Danzig, Elusive Quality, and many American sire lines — is quite different from that which produces great stayers. Most flat racehorses fall between the extremes, racing effectively at middle distances (1 mile to 1¼ miles) where both speed and stamina are required.
The Thoroughbred in Different Countries
The Thoroughbred racing programme differs significantly between jurisdictions. In the UK and Ireland, racing on grass turf predominates, with racing distances ranging from 5 furlongs to 2+ miles and the Classic programme centred on the 1-mile Guineas through the 1½-mile Derby and Oaks. In the US, dirt racing on oval tracks over distances of 6 furlongs to 1¼ miles (the Classic distances) is standard. In Australia, the programme mirrors the UK's turf tradition with Australian-specific distances and a calendar aligned to the Southern Hemisphere spring. In Japan, the JRA maintains a high-quality turf and dirt programme; in the UAE and Middle East, synthetic and dirt racing predominates. A horse can only be registered as a Thoroughbred if both its sire and dam are registered Thoroughbreds in an approved Stud Book.
