Alexandria Smouha Club Racecourse

The Alexandria Smouha Club Racecourse, located in the Smouha district of Alexandria — Egypt's Mediterranean port city and second-largest urban centre — provides Egypt's second major horse racing programme and represents the coastal counterpart to the Cairo-centred main programme. The Smouha Club was established in Alexandria during the city's cosmopolitan interwar heyday, when Alexandria was home to substantial Greek, Italian, Jewish, British, and French communities all of whom brought their equestrian traditions to Egypt's most international city. Horse racing at the Smouha Club developed during this period as part of the club's extensive sporting facilities, which also encompassed polo, tennis, and cricket reflecting the multinational character of the club membership. Alexandria's racing programme operates over a right-handed turf track with a shorter oval than Cairo, suited to the sprinting and miling distances that dominate the Egyptian provincial racing calendar. The Alexandria Classic Series — anchored by the Alexandria Derby, the Mediterranean Cup, and the Pharaohs' Stakes — attracts horses from across the Egyptian programme and occasionally international entries from Libya, Tunisia, and Lebanon during the annual International Race Day. The racecourse and the Smouha Club estate stand as a monument to Alexandria's cosmopolitan past and continue to attract the city's racing community, drawing from both the remaining established Egyptian families with racing traditions and the newer generation of thoroughbred owners who have entered Egyptian racing since the post-2000 economic opening.
