Cairo Racing Club (Gezira)

The Cairo Racing Club, operating at the Gezira Sporting Club on the island of Gezira in central Cairo, represents one of the oldest and most historically significant horse racing institutions in Africa and the Middle East. Horse racing on the Gezira island was established during the British colonial period — the Gezira Sporting Club itself was founded in 1882 as a recreational institution for British officers and administrators in Egypt, and thoroughbred flat racing quickly became one of the club's defining sporting activities. The track, located on an island in the River Nile with the Nile on both sides and Cairo's famous Kasr el-Nil district to the east, is arguably the world's most dramatically situated inner-city racecourse — a 1,800-metre left-handed turf oval surrounded by some of Egypt's most expensive real estate and with views of the city skyline. Cairo's racing tradition has attracted considerable Arabian and international bloodstock investment given Egypt's geographical position as a bridge between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Egyptian Thoroughbred breeding draws on both European bloodstock imports and the deep Arabian horse tradition of the region — Egypt has historically been one of the most important centres for Arabian horse breeding, and this heritage informs the character of the local thoroughbred population. The Cairo Racing Club runs the Egyptian Derby (Derbi Masr), one of North Africa's most prestigious Classic races, along with the Egyptian Oaks, the Egyptian Champion Stakes, and a series of conditions races that attract horses from neighbouring Arab racing nations. The Egyptian Racing Authority (ERA) manages licensing and pari-mutuel wagering across the Egyptian race programme.
