Freudenau Racecourse

Freudenau Racecourse in Vienna's Prater park is the oldest continuously operating flat racing venue in Central Europe and one of the continent's most historically significant thoroughbred facilities. Established in 1839 and having hosted the Vienna Derby since 1868, Freudenau occupies a unique position within the cultural landscape of the Austrian capital — the racecourse is set within the Prater, Vienna's famous parkland along the Danube Canal, and shares its historic grounds with the equally famous Prater Ferris Wheel and the centuries-old chestnut avenue. The flat turf track, a right-handed oval of approximately 2,200m, has hosted some of Central European racing's most significant moments across nearly 200 years of continuous operation. The Vienna Derby — run in June over 2,400m — is the centrepiece of Austrian thoroughbred racing and the region's most historically prestigious flat Classic. Austrian flat racing is administered by the Österreichischer Trabrennverein (Austrian Gallop), with the programme comprising approximately 50 race days per year concentrated at Freudenau and the Salzburg meeting at Rennbahn Salzburg-Streif. Austria's proximity to Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany, and Slovakia creates a natural cross-border dimension to its racing programme — the Vienna Derby regularly attracts entries from these neighbouring countries.
