About Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo

The Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo, located in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, is the most historically significant thoroughbred racecourse in South America. The track, which opened in 1882, is set within the Palermo parklands and features a 2,200m turf circuit surrounded by one of the world's great 19th-century grandstands. The Gran Premio Nacional — Argentina's equivalent of the Epsom Derby — is the country's most prestigious Classic, run over 2,500m in November. The José Antonio Terry, the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini, and the Gran Premio Jockey Club complete an elite programme that represents the apex of South American thoroughbred racing. Argentine racing produces horses capable of competing internationally: several Argentine-bred horses have won Group 1 races in Europe and North America.
