Thessaloniki Hippodrome

The Thessaloniki Hippodrome is northern Greece's primary horse racing venue, serving the country's second-largest city and its surrounding region of Central Macedonia. The track operates under ODIE governance as part of the national horse racing network, providing racing coverage for the northern Greek racing community that historically had limited access to the Athens-based main circuit. Thessaloniki's racing programme runs a shorter season than Athens — typically a summer season (May through September) capitalising on northern Greece's more moderate summer temperatures compared to the intense Athens heat — with a programme focused on Listed and conditions races feeding into the national Classic series run at Markopoulo. The hippodrome has a deep connection with the horse breeding tradition of Thessaly and Macedonia, two of Greece's historically most important horse-rearing regions, and the track plays an important role in the identification and early development of horses that go on to compete in the national Classic programme. The Thessaloniki Grand Prix and the Macedonian Derby are the track's most prestigious events, drawing horses from Athens and occasionally from neighbouring Bulgaria and North Macedonia.
