Horse Racing in Lithuania

Lithuania's horse racing tradition is rooted in standardbred harness racing — the trotting horse culture that dominates Northern and Central European racing from Scandinavia through the Baltic states, Poland, and Germany. The Kaunas Hippodrome and the Vilnius Hippodrome manage a national programme administered by the Lithuanian Equestrian Federation, with the Lithuanian Derby as the country's most prestigious harness race.

The horse holds a special place in Lithuanian cultural identity — the Žemaituka (Samogitian horse), a native Lithuanian breed developed over centuries in the forested wetlands of western Lithuania, is a living symbol of Baltic equestrian heritage. While modern racing uses imported standardbred horses, the indigenous Žemaituka breed is maintained through a dedicated conservation programme, and Žemaituka competitions at the Kaunas Hippodrome celebrate this cultural inheritance.

Lithuania's racing programme developed during the interwar independence period (1918-1940), was disrupted during the Soviet occupation, and was rebuilt after independence restoration in 1990. The Žemaituka (Samogitian horse) is one of the oldest horse breeds in Northern Europe — a compact, hardy pony-sized horse developed in the wetlands and forests of Lithuania's Samogitian highlands (Žemaitija) over at least 2,000 years. Lithuanian mythology places the horse at the centre of the pre-Christian Baltic religion — the horse was sacred to the Baltic gods Perkūnas and Aitvaras, and the care of sacred horses was a duty of the high priests (kriviai) of the Baltic religious system.

The Žemaituka's characteristics — compact size (130-150cm), exceptional endurance, sure-footedness on boggy terrain, and a calm temperament — made it invaluable for the Lithuanian cavalry of the Grand Duchy period. The breed's numbers declined dramatically during the 20th century as agricultural mechanization reduced the working horse population, and the breed was classified as endangered. The Lithuanian government and the Žemaituka Breeders Association have worked since the 1990s to reverse this decline through a conservation and breeding programme — the current population is estimated at several hundred registered individuals.

At the Kaunas Hippodrome, Žemaituka exhibitions and races have become a popular cultural feature of major racing days — providing a living connection to Lithuania's equestrian heritage that distinguishes the national racing experience from the purely commercial standardbred programme.

Horse race betting in Lithuania operates through licensed operators under the supervision of the Lithuanian Gaming Control Authority (Lošimų priežiūros tarnyba).
