The Pueblo of Pojoaque ("Po-wha-ge Owingeh" — "Water Drinking Place") has historically been one of the most severely impacted Pueblo communities — the population was nearly extinguished by smallpox epidemics in the 1890s and reduced to about 14 members. Casino revenue has funded an extraordinary cultural and demographic revival, with the pueblo's population now in the hundreds and its cultural programs among the most active of any Rio Grande Pueblo.
