Casino Tara

Casino Tara operates within Hotel de l'Annapurna — one of Kathmandu's oldest and most prestigious five-star hotels, opened in 1965 on Durbar Marg, the tree-lined boulevard of embassies, airline offices, and luxury hotels that forms the diplomatic and commercial spine of central Kathmandu. The Annapurna was built by the royal Rana family and named for the Annapurna massif — the tenth-highest mountain in the world — whose silhouette dominates the horizon from Kathmandu on clear days.

Casino Tara is one of Kathmandu's five hotel casinos, all of which operate under the same legal framework: gaming is restricted to foreign nationals, and the licences were issued to stimulate foreign exchange earnings from the trekking and mountaineering tourism economy that began developing in earnest after Nepal opened to foreign visitors in 1950. The casino offers roulette, blackjack, baccarat, and slot machines in the hotel's atmospheric surroundings.

The Annapurna's position at the centre of Durbar Marg — with the Royal Palace (now the Narayanhiti Palace Museum) immediately to the north and Thamel, the backpacker and trekking district, within walking distance to the northwest — gives Casino Tara access to both luxury hotel guests and independent travellers passing through Kathmandu en route to the Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base Camp, or other Himalayan trekking routes.
