About El San Juan Hotel Casino
El San Juan Hotel Casino is Puerto Rico's most storied gaming venue, operating in one of the Caribbean's most legendary hotels: the El San Juan Hotel opened in 1958 on Isla Verde's white sand beach, drew the Rat Pack in its golden years, and established Puerto Rico as a genuine rival to Havana for Caribbean high-society gaming before Castro closed Cuba's casinos in 1960. The hotel's mahogany-panelled lobby, the famous 80-foot chandelier, and the poolside bungalows where Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Elizabeth Taylor stayed have been maintained through multiple renovations, and the property — now part of Hilton's Curio Collection — retains more of its original glamour than almost any mid-century Caribbean hotel.
Puerto Rico's casino industry predates Nevada's dominance of the US gaming market: the first casino licences were issued in 1948 under Law 221, and through the 1950s and early 1960s, San Juan competed directly with Havana for the affluent American gambling tourist. The Cuban revolution of 1959 closed Havana's casinos almost overnight and redirected the entire Caribbean gaming market to Puerto Rico, cementing the island's position as the casino capital of the Americas for a generation.
The casino floor offers roulette, blackjack, baccarat, craps, three-card poker, and an extensive slot hall. The Isla Verde hotel strip — where El San Juan is the anchor property alongside the InterContinental, Courtyard, and Marriott hotels — fronts one of San Juan's finest beaches, and the combination of casino, beach, and the historic Old San Juan fortifications and cobblestoned streets (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) 20 minutes away makes the destination genuinely multi-dimensional.
