Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots

Overview

Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots is one of America's most historic thoroughbred racetracks — operating continuously (with some gaps for war and hurricane) since 1872 and claiming the title of the third-oldest active racetrack in the United States. Located in the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans, the Fair Grounds runs its annual racing meet from Thanksgiving Day through late March, culminating with the Louisiana Derby (a major Kentucky Derby prep race) in late March.

The Fair Grounds was substantially damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and underwent a major reconstruction. The slot machine facility was added as part of the rebuild and provides year-round gaming revenue that supports the track's operation outside of the racing season. The property is operated by Churchill Downs Inc. (the parent company of the Kentucky Derby's Churchill Downs racetrack).

Racing & Gaming

Live thoroughbred racing runs Thanksgiving Day through late March. 500+ slot machines provide year-round gaming. The Louisiana Derby (major Kentucky Derby prep) is the marquee event. The historic grandstand dates to 1904.
