Overview

Foxwoods Resort Casino is one of the largest casino resort complexes in the world, operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation in Ledyard, Connecticut. The property encompasses six individual casinos under one roof, along with hotels, entertainment venues, restaurants, and retail — all spread across a building footprint that rivals the largest Las Vegas properties in raw square footage.

Foxwoods opened as a high-stakes bingo hall in 1986 and added slot machines in 1991 under a compact that established the model for tribal gaming revenue sharing that Connecticut — and many other states — would adopt. At its peak in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Foxwoods was the highest-grossing casino in the world, generating over $1 billion annually and driving enormous economic development in an otherwise rural region of southeastern Connecticut.

The Mashantucket Pequot were nearly extinct as a tribe by the 20th century — numbering fewer than 10 enrolled members at one point. The federal recognition they achieved in 1983, combined with the gaming rights that followed, enabled one of the most remarkable tribal renaissance stories in American history. Foxwoods is simultaneously a world-class entertainment destination and a symbol of that resilience.

Foxwoods comprises six themed casino areas: the Grand Pequot Tower Casino, Great Cedar Casino, Two Trees Inn Casino, MGM Grand at Foxwoods, Rainmaker Casino, and Fox Tower Casino. Combined, these gaming spaces feature over 6,500 slot and electronic gaming machines and more than 400 live table games including every major casino game. The poker room — one of the largest in the northeastern United States — runs cash games 24/7 across dozens of tables and hosts major tournament events throughout the year.
