Overview

Turning Stone Resort Casino is operated by the Oneida Indian Nation and is one of the most remarkable tribal gaming enterprises in the United States — not just the largest casino resort in New York State, but one of the most comprehensive destination resort complexes anywhere in the northeastern US, competing with Atlantic City properties for the regional visitor base. The casino opened in 1993 as a small bingo hall and through three decades of reinvestment has grown into a campus of four hotels, six golf courses, a 5,000-seat event center, a luxury spa, and more than 40 dining and entertainment outlets spread across 3,400 acres.

The Oneida Indian Nation's story is one of the most dramatic economic reversals in tribal gaming history. Prior to the casino's opening, the Oneida Nation was among the most economically disadvantaged tribal communities in the eastern US — occupying a six-acre parcel in central New York (a fraction of the 6 million acres guaranteed by their 1794 treaty). Revenue from Turning Stone has funded land acquisition, housing, healthcare, and a cultural renewal that has transformed the Oneida community's prospects in ways the 1993 founders could scarcely have imagined.

Uniquely among New York tribal casinos, Turning Stone operates without a gaming compact with the State of New York — the Oneida Nation has maintained that federal law does not require a compact for Class III gaming on their trust lands in New York, and the state has not challenged this position. This means Turning Stone is not subject to the revenue-sharing arrangement that other New York gaming facilities must pay.
