Overview
Sands Macao opened in May 2004 as the first casino in Macau operated by a non-Chinese entity — Sheldon Adelson's Las Vegas Sands Corporation. In its first year of operation the property recouped its entire construction cost, and the Sands Macao's extraordinary financial performance proved the enormous pent-up demand for US-style gaming in Asia. The Sands Macao directly triggered the subsequent wave of foreign investment that transformed Macau from a small Portuguese-influenced gaming enclave into the world's highest-revenue gaming jurisdiction.
